The sleep well volunteer will provide practical and social support to patients preparing for night time on the ward.
What’s involved?
- On arrival to the ward report to the Nurse in Charge, sign in and receive advice on patients to visit on the ward
- Talking to patients, relatives, and ward staff
- Offer and provide hot drinks to assist with relaxing for sleep
- Answering a buzzer and locating a member of staff if needed
- Assist patients preparing for sleep, which may include the following tasks:
- Clear patient tables (not including bodily fluids)
- Offer patients ear plugs and eye masks if required
- Support will switching off Hospedia screens and lowering lighting
- Report back any concerns they have to the registered nurse caring for the patient
- Replenish water jugs for those patients who are not fluid restricted or require thickened fluids
Skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Willing to learn and to follow instruction from members of staff
- Good attention to detail
- Committed to help and support staff and the ability to liaise with professionals at all levels
- Punctual and reliable
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Understanding of the need for confidentiality
