A Local Group is a team of people who share our passion for livelihood and creating tools. They collect tools from their area and sometimes organize tool collections at local supermarkets, DIY stores and garden centres.
They also promote our work to local community groups and media outlets.
Some groups sort and refurbish the tools, such as removing rust and fixing handles.
To start a group, you need a storage space for tools, such as an empty garage or a large shed, and the enthusiasm to gather like-minded friends. Our local groups have a great community spirit and are a huge support for Tools with a Mission (TWAM).
The activities of each group may vary, but the main tasks usually include:
- Collecting tools from requests made by the general public through the TWAM website.
- Promoting TWAM locally to generate your own tool donation requests.
- Storing the tools until they are collected by a TWAM van.
- Sorting the tools so that all broken and unsuitable tools are removed before the van collects them.
- Doing basic tool refurbishment as facilities and skills allow.
- Visiting shows, farmers markets, local events, etc. to promote TWAM and tool donation.
- Offering talks and demonstrations to churches and other local groups to encourage their support.
- Working with your local Tool Collectors, Volunteer Speakers and Community Fundraisers to have a real impact on your community, which may include fundraising to support the work of TWAM.
- Offering support to other potential groups who need advice on how to set up and run a group.
You may not do all of these things, but they are examples of what Local Groups do for TWAM.
The Group Coordinator is the main contact person for the group and Head Office.
This is an incredibly rewarding role as you are directly helping people improve their lives.
Skills
TWAM is looking for Group Coordinators who can be the first contact for our Local Groups:
- We want people who love tools and want to prevent them from going to waste.
- We need people who can communicate our passion and vision to their neighbours and friends.
- We value people who are well-organised, collaborative, supportive and creative, and who can help start and sustain a successful group.
