At any one time in the hospital, we can have lots of people with Dementia in our beds and many are without the support of family. Hospitals can be a frightening place for anyone but for those with Dementia it can cause increased agitation, distress, and anxiety. This volunteer role will aim to help provide the patients with some much-needed support during the long days in hospital to prevent boredom and isolation leading to increased anxiety.
What’s involved?
- On arrival to the ward report to the Nurse in Charge, sign in and ask about any patients to visit during shift
- Visiting identified Dementia patients to provide company and support them to express their needs by actions such as assisting them to complete communication passports/’This is me’ information and the sunflower scheme
- Supporting with activities included within the Dementia Activity boxes
- Replenishment of Dementia Activity boxes
- Assist with support during mealtimes where necessary
- Time to talk with carers
- Report any concerns or information given by the patients to Nurse in Charge
- Nurse in charge will advise volunteer of any limitations attached to their visit, i.e. patients not to be visited/being barrier nursed
Skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Willing to learn and to follow instruction from members of staff
- Good attention to detail
- Committed to help and support staff and the ability to liaise with professionals at all levels
- Punctual and reliable
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Understands the need for confidentiality
