Hospitality Volunteer - Steamship Shieldhall

SS Shieldhall is the largest working steamship left in Britain. Operated by volunteers out of Southampton Docks for summer leisure day trips and as an all year static venue, she serves as a tribute to Britain's maritime heritage and a living reminder of the golden age of steam.

Volunteer on the hospitality side - this includes different things like serving in the bar, preparing or serving food and hot drinks, checking tickets and looking after the wellbeing of passengers on board. If you prefer not to go out on the water, we also need help at alongside events.

You need to do a day's on board training each year and some online training, after that its very much up to you to sign up to what you want to do.

The whole steamship environment is unique and fun and our passengers are very appreciative of the care we give them.

We also have volunteering in engineering and deck crew - in fact we are all volunteers.

If you want to take this further please register your interest today.

Skills

  • We don't ask for prior experience for hospitality roles as its all straightforward and training is given, though to work in catering you need to complete an online food hygiene course which the Shieldhall will pay for (Food Hygiene level 2).
  • You will be working with other people co-operatively as a team.
  • Some working and serving areas are physically restricted as to space and have accessibility challenges.
  • For roles that directly interface with our passengers we try to maintain a cheerful and unflappable demeanour; taking health and safety very seriously given the environment we work in.
  • You need to be able to get to Southampton docks, as public transport is not available, though we try to facilitate car share etc.
