Ward befriender volunteers provide companionship, support, and reassurance to patients during their stay in hospital. By offering a friendly presence and engaging in conversation, activities, or simple practical assistance, volunteers help reduce feelings of isolation, improve wellbeing, and enhance the overall patient experience.

Skills

  • Friendly, approachable, and empathetic manner
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Sensitivity to patients’ needs, dignity, and cultural differences
  • Patience and understanding, especially for patients who may be anxious or unwell
  • Willing to learn and to follow instruction from members of staff
  • Committed to help and support staff and the ability to liaise with professionals at all levels
  • Reliability, punctuality, and commitment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of the need for confidentiality
