Background
Dancing on Wheels New Forest is a community group providing a wheelchair dancing class meeting in the afternoon of the second Wednesday of each month, open to all wheelchair users and led by their interests in dance. Members explore movement, music, rhythm and flow in these fun, accessible, creative classes.
The wheelchair dancing class is led by 2 lovely experienced dance tutors and are designed to meet the needs of everyone in the class, whether being a self-propelled wheelchair user, powered wheelchair user or are accompanied by a companion.
We dance in the big accessible ballroom at New Milton Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road, New Milton BH25 6DE with easy parking outside. Arrival is from 3pm for socialising time, then 3.30pm to 4.30pm led by our dance tutors in the group based on a monthly changing musical theme.
Dancing on Wheels New Forest is currently sponsored by Culture in Common until March 2026. After this we will need to seek new funding.
Volunteer opportunity
I am Jill Fairfax, founder and Coordinator of Dancing on Wheels New Forest with the help of volunteers on the dancing day and in the background. My son Simon is a wheelchair user and after lockdown, I was looking for a new activity which he would enjoy along with some of his friends using wheelchairs.
I am looking for a person to be involved with the story of this wheelchair dancing class and support me to keep the background administration for the group up to date. This can include using the phone/email to communicate with our current wheelchair user membership and their supporters, researching to find new members living in the community and using a wheelchair. Other admin jobs such as ordering props etc. online, helping with organising the group to participate in events e.g. New Milton Christmas Parade or discovering new events suitable for wheelchair dancers.
