Active LD is looking for a passionate and committed Non-Executive Director to join our Board and help shape the future of our growing organisation.
We believe that being active is a power for good. For people with learning disabilities, regular physical activity can improve physical and mental wellbeing, build confidence and independence, create friendships and connections, and help people feel more involved in their communities. Yet many people face significant barriers to being active.
Our aim is to help more people with learning disabilities connect with regular physical activity through enjoyable, welcoming and accessible opportunities. We are not just about sport – we help people find ways of being active that work for them.
Launched in 2025, Active LD has grown from the success of Winchester Personal Bests. We now deliver Personal Bests events in Winchester and Chichester, regular activity sessions and are developing a training programme for professionals. We are at an exciting stage of growth and want to build a strong, sustainable organisation that can make a lasting difference.
As a Non-Executive Director, you will help shape our strategy and future direction, provide constructive challenge and support, and help ensure Active LD continues to grow responsibly. We are particularly keen to strengthen our Board's expertise in finance, legal matters and governance.
Most importantly, we want someone who shares our passion for improving the lives of people with learning disabilities. We are a user-led organisation, so connecting with our community is an important part of the role. We want our Directors to listen to people with learning disabilities, understand what matters to them and ensure their voices help shape our decisions.
The role is voluntary, with reasonable expenses reimbursed. We estimate a commitment of around 4–6 days per year, including six evening Board meetings, preparation, a Strategy Day and occasional activities.
If you believe in the power of being active and would like to use your experience to help more people with learning disabilities lead healthier, happier and more connected lives, we would love to hear from you.
Skills
We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in:
• Finance, financial management or accountancy
• Legal matters, compliance or governance
• Strategic planning and organisational development
• Risk management and oversight
• Income generation, fundraising or partnerships
We are also looking for someone who can:
• Think strategically and provide constructive challenge
• Communicate clearly and build positive relationships
• Listen, collaborate and value different perspectives
• Bring sound judgement and make informed decisions
• Understand and value lived experience
• Contribute to a user-led organisation and connect with people with learning disabilities
• Commit time to Board meetings, preparation and occasional Active LD activities
You do not need previous Non-Executive Director experience. Most importantly, you will share our passion for the benefits of regular physical activity for people with learning disabilities.
