Conservation Volunteer

My name is Gary Underwood, and I am the Senior Project Officer for The Conservation Volunteers (TCV). I am overseeing conservation activities at two woodland sites:

  • Nursling Woods, Nursling, Southampton
  • Mannington Woods, Mannington, Dorset

Both sites provide free outdoor conservation volunteering opportunities that support improvements in physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection while delivering positive environmental outcomes.

At TCV, we are committed to empowering individuals and communities by improving health, life opportunities, and local green spaces. Central to this work is the recruitment, development, and support of volunteers.

TCV's mission is to connect people with the natural environment, creating healthier communities and more sustainable green spaces. Our work focuses on practical conservation, environmental education, community engagement, and volunteering opportunities that enable people to make a positive difference to both their local environment and their own wellbeing.

I believe that Nursling Woods and Mannington Woods present significant opportunities to develop impactful conservation projects that benefit both people and nature. Through regular volunteer-led conservation activities, habitat enhancement works, and community engagement initiatives, these sites can become valuable assets for local biodiversity while providing welcoming and inclusive opportunities for people to improve their health, build skills, and strengthen their connection with the natural world.

The project will seek to deliver long-term environmental improvements, increase community participation in conservation, and create sustainable volunteering opportunities that support TCV's vision of healthier people, healthier communities, and a healthier environment.
