Did you know that Wolvesey Castle was one of the greatest medieval buildings in England – the palace of the powerful and wealthy bishops of Winchester? One of the most important Norman palaces in England, it was built during a period when Winchester was second only to London as a royal and ecclesiastical centre. The palace remained in use until the 1680s, when Bishop George Morley decided to build a new palace nearby.
Although subsequent bishops carried out various repairs and alterations to the buildings, Bishop Henry of Blois's (1129-71) palace survived virtually intact for the next 500 years. It is his work that comprises most of the ruins visible today which English Heritage cares and conserves today for visitors to enjoy. Overall, English Heritage cares and conserves over 400 historic properties and monuments as a charity.
Help English Heritage today by becoming a Monitor Volunteer!
Monitor volunteers play an important role in looking after English Heritage sites and ensuring those sites are safe and well presented for our many visitors. This may mean checking for any issues with the buildings and ruins, the wider landscape, or entry to and from the site. You will help us to better understand and care for our sites by reporting issues and helping to maintain the sites' presentation.
What will I be doing?
- Collecting and disposing of any litter found on site, provided it is safe to do so
- Providing feedback about any problems you find on the site, such as any damage to the buildings
- Maintaining the site's appearance by cleaning signage
- Chatting to any visitors that you see when you are on site
- As far as possible, respond to, or pass on to English Heritage, visitors’ questions regarding the site or its history. You will also direct visitors to the website where they can find further information
- Other tasks might include replacing the English Heritage flag when damaged
- Supporting as part of a team the opening and closing of the site
Sessions are flexible and are open to discussion.
We are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments we can provide for you.
