Locks Heath Puma Cub Coaches

Purpose of the Role

Youth Rugby Coaches are at the heart of the player experience at Locks Heath Pumas. The role is to create a safe, fun and inclusive environment where young players can develop their rugby skills, confidence and love of the game.

Working within the RFU's Age Grade Rugby framework and the values of Locks Heath Pumas, coaches focus on developing the whole child, not just the rugby player. Sessions should be player-centred, development-driven and encourage enjoyment, teamwork and lifelong participation in rugby

Time Commitment

This is a regular volunteer role throughout the rugby season.

Most training sessions take place on Sunday mornings at local grounds, with matches and festivals typically taking place at weekends throughout the season. Coaches are also encouraged to attend occasional coaches' meetings, club events and coach development workshops where possible.

We understand that our coaches are volunteers with work, family and other commitments, and we don't expect you to be available every week. However, as players thrive on consistency and familiar faces, we do ask for a regular commitment and good communication if you are unable to attend. This helps ensure sessions are well supported and provides the best possible experience for our young players.

Main Responsibilities

Deliver Safe and Enjoyable Coaching

  • Alongside your fellow coaches plan and deliver fun, engaging and age-appropriate coaching sessions that meet the needs of all players.
  • Coach in line with the RFU Age Grade Rugby principles, ensuring that player development and enjoyment are always the priority.
  • Create an inclusive environment where every child feels welcome, valued and able to participate regardless of experience or ability.
  • Develop players' technical, tactical, physical and personal skills through positive coaching.
  • Encourage players to learn through game-based activities, problem solving and teamwork.
  • Ensure all players have meaningful opportunities to participate and develop throughout the season, in line with RFU Age Grade guidance.

Support Player Welfare

  • Place the welfare and safety of every player at the centre of all coaching decisions.
  • Follow all club safeguarding procedures and RFU regulations.
  • Deliver coaching sessions safely, carrying out dynamic risk assessments where appropriate.
  • Be aware of players' individual needs, including medical conditions, additional support needs and wellbeing.
  • Promote positive behaviour and ensure rugby remains enjoyable for players, parents and spectators.
  • Uphold the RFU Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship in every session and match.

Match / Festivals / Tournament Responsibilities

  • Prepare players for matches / festivals in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Encourage learning and development through match play rather than focusing solely on results.
  • Work with assistant coaches and the Team Manager to ensure match days run smoothly.
  • Promote good sportsmanship and respect towards referees, opposition teams and supporters.
  • Support all players to develop confidence through appropriate game time in accordance with RFU Age Grade principles.

Work as Part of the Club

  • Work closely with fellow coaches, Team Managers, the Youth Head Coach and Club Committee.
  • Communicate effectively with players and parents regarding training, fixtures and club activities.
  • Share ideas and best practice with other coaching teams.
  • Support club events, recruitment activities and player development initiatives where possible.
  • Complete any mandatory RFU training and maintain coaching qualifications appropriate to the role.
