The Gardening Club, run by Eastleigh Borough and Romsey Mencap, is a welcoming outdoor group for adults with learning disabilities, held at allotments in West End, Southampton. Managed by a dedicated Co-ordinator, the club offers members the chance to enjoy being outdoors, learn new skills, and take pride in growing their own flowers, fruit and vegetables.
The club meets on Saturday mornings from March to October, giving members the opportunity to get involved in planting, watering, and maintaining the allotment. During the winter months, regular meetings are held to plan and prepare for the next growing season.
For many members, the Gardening Club is a valuable opportunity to connect with others, build confidence, and enjoy meaningful activity in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Volunteers play an important role in helping sessions run smoothly. You’ll support members with their gardening tasks, encourage participation, and help create a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. There may also be opportunities to get involved in general upkeep of the allotments, such as maintenance, watering during hot weather, or small repair projects.
Skills
If you enjoy being outdoors, have an interest in gardening, and are happy to “muck in”, this could be a great opportunity for you. You don’t need to be an expert gardener - enthusiasm, a practical approach, and a willingness to support others are what matter most.
This role would suit someone with good communication skills who enjoys helping people with learning disabilities get the most out of their time outdoors. If you also have practical or creative skills and enjoy hands-on tasks, even better.
Volunteering with the Gardening Club is a flexible way to make a real difference, whether you attend Saturday sessions or occasionally help with additional upkeep during the week.
Volunteers must be 18+. A DBS criminal record check will be required.
