Opportunities with Havant Borough Council - Grow it, Cook it, Eat it

About

We are embarking on what we hope will be an amazing project, the ‘Grow it, Cook it, Eat it’ project. We have taken on a large allotment at Stockheath Lane in Leigh Park, Havant and are keen to get the ground ready for the next planting season.
We need groups to get involved to help us. There is a lot of different work that is needed, right now we need volunteers to help us to clear the weeds and get the preparation work done. Would your group be able to help us? We don’t mind whether your members might be able to give us a couple of hours of their time or would like to make a bigger commitment, whatever you can offer we will be very happy with.
At present, we have managed to clear, what was 2 foot high, very well established weeds and get back to the earth. However, with the rain and the sunshine we have had the weeds are coming back and we need to get on top of that. Even if we broke it down into 1 metre square areas for teams to work in, this would make a massive difference.
We have great ideas, and would be keen to hear yours to, but we need people who can get involved. You might already be a keen gardener and would enjoy taking a weedy patch of earth to harvesting a crop. It might be that you want to learn new skills, or even to get something on your CV so you can follow a career in this type of work. Maybe you just want the experience of working as part of a team, or getting to know others. However you can help us, we are really keen to hear from you.
We have a lot of manual work at the moment that is needed, but that is not all. We also have a lot of ‘background’ work that is required. We want people who are a whizz with social media, can build raised beds etc for us, are good at contacting companies and getting things reduced or better still free. There is such a range of skills that are needed. Can you help? If so, please contact Carole on carole.samuda@havant.gov.uk or 07887 991814 and let’s start, not only the conversation but the journey to success.
