Supporting Health, Wellbeing and Community Through Walking
Gosport resident Ann Sandall volunteers as a walk leader for Walking for Health, helping local people stay active, socially connected and supported through regular community walks.
After retiring from a hectic career, Ann decided to begin volunteering. Eight years later, she says the experience has greatly enhanced her own life while also helping improve the wellbeing of others within the community.
Through leading walks and meeting people from different backgrounds, Ann has developed a greater appreciation for the local history and scenery across Gosport. The walks combine physical activity with social connection, helping participants improve both their health and wellbeing while building friendships and confidence.
One of the group’s favourite routes takes walkers around the Crescent Gardens area, offering views of the lakes at Workhouse Bridge, St Mary’s Church, Alverstoke, and the historic Crescent buildings and gardens.
Ann explains that volunteering has positively impacted her own wellbeing and confidence:
“Meeting lots of walkers and being involved in both social and physical activities has encouraged me to learn more about the local history of Gosport.”
She is particularly proud of the way the walking group helps improve people’s lives by encouraging physical activity, supporting mental wellbeing, and creating meaningful friendships within the local community.
Ann’s story highlights how volunteering can bring people together, strengthen communities, and improve wellbeing for everyone involved.
