Volunteers Week 2025: Marshalling Magic

4 June 2025

‘Keep Attacking’ was a local assault race, for which volunteers were required. Volunteers were asked to help with route marshaling, which involved guiding runners participating in the event along the correct route, so they didn’t go the wrong way. Additionally, some volunteers were asked to direct people where to park their cars. Lastly, volunteers were required to be at the information centre within the community centre to help with registration of participants with any frequently asked questions, and give people information on storing their clothing pre and post race.

Joel, Organiser and Volunteer Coordinator, wrote the following testimonial on the one of the volunteers we successfully helped to place:

She was a volunteer at a local Assault Race called “Keep Attacking”, for which I was the lead organisor. It was clear to see that she was out of her comfort zone on arrival, she was extremely nervous and quiet initially, but showing true character and bravery, she put her nerves to one side and gave her full attention to the initial volunteers brief.”

“She was tasked with communicating with and directing participants of the Assault Race up and down potentially hazardous obstacles, which were natural inclines through the woodlands, additionally she instructed participants on proper and safe usage of the safety ropes provided to help navigate the steep inclines. She then would direct the runners on where to go on completion of tackling the inclines.”

“She grew into the role very quickly, using her good communication skills to great effect and was a key part of the safe running of the event, along with the other volunteers and medics. I would highly recommend her for any volunteering or paid role, as she showed great courage and character on the day to turn up to a place where she didn’t know anyone and play such a vital role in the day. She very quickly came off her shell and once she did, I got to know her fun and hard working personality!”
