Volunteers’ Week 2026, Team Spotlight: Jag – Selfless Service

5 June 2026

Selfless Service, Community and the Lasting Impact of Volunteering

For Jag, volunteering is far more than an activity. It is a lifelong commitment rooted in community, kindness, and supporting others.

Many people know Jag as a Lead Volunteering Service Coordinator, but outside of work he has volunteered since the age of 16 at his local Sikh Gurdwara in Portsmouth as a Sewadar, supporting others through acts of “Sewa”, the Sikh principle of selfless service.

Although inspired by his faith, Jag’s volunteering has always focused on supporting the wider community regardless of background, faith, age, or circumstance. Through years of giving his time to others, volunteering has helped shape his values, strengthen community connections, and reinforce the importance of humility, compassion, and collective support.

Inspired by Faith and Community

For Jag, volunteering has always been a natural part of life.

“Volunteering has always been a natural part of my life through Sikhism. The principle of ‘Sewa’, meaning selfless service, is a core part of the Sikh faith and something I grew up around from a young age.”

However, Jag believes that true volunteering comes from genuine care and willingness to help others. Although volunteering comes naturally within Sikhism, it is still something that must come from the heart and be done willingly, without force or expectation.

At the centre of Sikh teachings is the importance of supporting humanity and helping people without discrimination. This belief continues to shape the way Jag approaches volunteering and community support today.

Jag believes that volunteering is rooted in his faith. It is ultimately about supporting the greater good of the community and helping people regardless of who they are.

Supporting the Community Through Service

As a Sewadar, Jag supports the Gurdwara community in many different ways. His role involves helping wherever support is needed and contributing to the welcoming and inclusive environment the Gurdwara provides.

Over the years, his volunteering has included:

  • Preparing and serving food in the langar kitchen
  • Supporting special events and celebrations within the Sikh calendar
  • Welcoming visitors and community members
  • Helping services and activities run smoothly behind the scenes
  • Supporting wider community initiatives and gatherings

One of the most important traditions within every Gurdwara is the langar, the free community kitchen where meals are offered to anyone who visits, regardless of background or circumstances.

For Jag, the langar represents the true spirit of volunteering and community support, bringing people together through equality, kindness and shared humanity.

The Most Rewarding Part of Volunteering

One of the aspects Jag values most about volunteering is the sense of togetherness and connection it creates within the community.

“It’s rewarding being part of something that supports people from all backgrounds. Even small acts of service can positively impact someone’s day.”

The Gurdwara welcomes people from many different backgrounds, and volunteers help create an environment where everyone feels comfortable, respected, and included.

Through volunteering, Jag has seen first-hand how simple acts of kindness can help build stronger and more connected communities.

Personal Impact

Volunteering from a young age has had a lasting impact on Jag personally and professionally. Jag believes that volunteering has helped shape who he is as a person, and knows that it has strengthened his confidence, communication skills and given him a sense of responsibility.

At the same time, volunteering has helped him remain grounded and connected to both his faith and his local community. While reminding him of the importance of humility, community, and helping others.

The skills, values, and experiences developed through volunteering continue to influence both his work and personal life.

A Memorable Moment

One experience that has stayed with Jag is seeing people from completely different backgrounds come together through community events and the langar. “Seeing people feel welcomed, comfortable and connected really showed me the impact volunteering can have”.

For Jag, moments like this highlight how volunteering can break down barriers, strengthen community spirit, and create meaningful human connections through simple acts of service.

Encouraging Others to Volunteer

Jag encourages anyone considering volunteering to take the first step, regardless of experience or background.

“Just start. You don’t need experience to make a difference, and even a small amount of your time can positively impact both others and yourself.”

His message reflects the belief that volunteering is accessible to everyone and that every contribution, no matter how small, has value.

Volunteers’ Week 2026

Jag’s story reflects this year’s Volunteers’ Week theme, Stronger Together, Supporting Our Communities.

Through years of quiet dedication and selfless service, he has helped create welcoming spaces, support others, and strengthen community spirit. His ongoing commitment demonstrates the lasting impact volunteering can have on both individuals and the wider community.

By giving his time to help others, Jag continues to show how compassion, kindness and community service can create meaningful and lasting change.
